Johann Ulmer was born on February 4, 1841 in Gassendorf, Galicia, Austria to Johann Jakob Ulmer and Katharina Frick. Christina Wagner was born on November 6, 1841 in Brigidau, Galicia, Austria. After their marriage on July 31, 1864, Johann and Christina went on to have 8 children:
Elisabetha: June 29, 1865 Gassendorf - October 26, 1930 Siemiginow, Galicia, Austria. She married Johann Rauch (1856-1921) and had 9 children: Philippina (1883-1884), Johann (1885 - ), Andreas (1887 - ), Katharina (1889-1890), Heinrich (1891-1968), Jakob (1894 - ), Elisabetha (1897 - ), Philippine (1900 - ), and Martin (1903-1921). Not a lot is known about most of the children except for Heinrich, Elisabetha and Philippine who were resettled in 1940.
Johann: August 16, 1867 Gassendorf - April 21, 1917 Knihinin Kolonia, Galicia, Austria. He married Dorothea Bachmann (1875-1915) and 9 children: Maria Margaretha (1895-1902), Katharina Ulmer (1898 - ), Karolina (1899 - ) Elisabetha (1901 - ), Margaretha (1904-1904), Paul (1905 - ), Maria (1906 - 1908), Dorothea (1908 - ), Johann (1912-1913). No information could be found for any of the children.
Jakob: our paternal grandfather
Margaretha: March 26, 1872 Gassendorf - unknown. Not much is known about Margaretha. It is believed that she immigrated to Canada, landing in New York in 1909 but it can't be verified
Katharina: October 26, 1874 Gassendorf - September 9, 1921 Knihinin Kolonia, Galicia. Before marrying her husband George Dowbenka (1877 - ?), Katharina had an illegitimate son Gustav (1895 - ). She had 5 children with George: Wilhelmine (1905 - ), Adam (1907 - ), twins Johann (1909-1909) and Franz (1909-1909), and Johann (1910-1910). No information can be found for her surviving children.
Philippina: December 26, 1876 Gassendorf - August 24, 1957 Neudorf, Saskatchewan. It's believed that Philippina and her brother Mathias went to live with their uncle Ludwig after the death of her father in 1888. She immigrated to Neudorf, Saskatchewan with Ludwig Ulmer and his family in 1893. She married Johann Litzenberger (1875 - 1918) in January 1898 in Neudorf. They had 10 children: Elizabeth (1898-1981), Rosina (1900-1975), Johann (1902-1961), Margaretha (1904-1908), Katherina (1906-1908), Philipina (1908-1990), Albert (1910-1972), Edward (1913-1980), Michael (1915-1969), Lydia (1918-2003). Philippina married Herman Bergman in 1922 after Johann died. All of her children remained in the Neudorf, SK area.
Valentin: November 11, 1878 Gassendorf - March 30, 1968 Melville, Saskatchewan. Valentin immigrated by himself to the Melville, Saskatchewan area in 1900. He married Elisabeth Mock on January 24, 1905 in Lemberg, SK. They had 10 children: Katherine (1907-1993), Christine (1909-1997), Marie Theresa (1910-1994), Phyllis (1912-1973), Gertrud (1914-2011), Ella (1917-2017), Viola (1919-?), John Harold (1921-1993), Clarence (1926-1926), and Delbert (1930-2005). All the children remained in the Melville area.
Mathias: January 28, 1881 Gassendorf - 1963 Guelph, Ontario. Mathias immigrated to Canada with her sister Philippina and uncle Ludwig in 1893. He married Maria Miller (1888-1923) on June 30, 1907 in Neudorf. They had 1 daughter Lillian (1911-?). He married Christina Appenheimer ( 1889-1948) in 1925. Later in life he moved to Guelph, Ontario to live with his daughter.
Our great grandmother Christina Wagner died young on May 3, 1881 in Gassendorf from typhus.
Johann married his second wife Philippina Wick (September 18, 1953 Holobutow, Galicia - December 14, 1896 Brigidau) on June 26, 1881, a little over a month after Christina died. Johann and Philippina had 4 children:
Adam: August 27, 1882 Gassendorf - ?. Adam married Rosine Emma Friedrich (1890-?), date unknown. They had at least one son Hans (1912-1945). While more information hasn't been found, it appears that Adam and his family made their way to Germany, most likely as part of the 1940 relocation.
Josef: April 4, 1884 Gassendorf. No information found for Josef.
Therese: February 6, 1886 Gassendorf. No information found for Therese.
Ludwig: August 15, 1887 Gassendorf - January 19, 1890 Brigidau. No information found for Ludwig
Johann died on September 1, 1888 in Gassendorf. After his death, his and Christina's children went separate ways and Philippina Wick with her 4 children moved to Brigidau. Elisabetha married before her father's death and moved to Knihinin Kolonia. It is likely that some of her siblings, include Jakob, lived with her after Johann's death. Philippina and Mathias lived with their uncle Ludwig until they immigrated to Canada in 1893.
